The Great Poster Debate

The great poster debate. Before criticising posters on lampposts in your area here are reasons we at Voting Matters Ireland think they are good for democracy:

  1. GOOD FOR CHANGE - A ban on posters would be hugely advantageous to sitting Councillors. For a new candidate getting your face and name out there is critical and posters help.

  2. PEOPLE HAVE BUSY LIVES - Most people have very busy lives and don’t know that there are elections happening. Those of you tuned into current affairs will be aware but the vast majority of people are busy with work, family and the pressures of life and don’t actually know that there is an election underway. Posters play a huge role in making people aware.

  3. SIGN OF A STRONG TEAM - Posters are one way that candidates and campaigns can motivate supporters. If your local candidate has a strong poster game it shows that people believe in them so much they are prepared to break their backs going up and down ladders to get their candidate’s face in prime position.

  4. TIDY TOWNS - We have strict litter rules and fines for breaking those rules. The vast majority of candidates abide by these. If you see a ‘rogue’ poster anywhere simply contact the candidate/their team (be nice) and they will get it sorted ASAP.
